Opening night for Rajah's show
The Cat In the Hat
Thursday October 14, 2010
Tonight at the Mexican Institute of Culture in Belize City, Image Factory curator delivered a highly charged and explosive art talk to a full house of diplomats, art fans, teachers, publishers, artists, drivers, secretaries, lawyers and radio broadcasters.
In less than 10 minutes Swasey launched into poetic speak quoting from master writers including Eduardo Galeano and the ledgendary Dr. Seuss. With low light, a guitar, a bag of books and a t-shirt that read WHY are you here? Swasey rode a rhythm of elegant streams of word waltz. Part bi-polar energy, part slam poetry the talk was truly an important moment in Belizean art. The occasion for the "speech" was a homecoming exhibit titled Beyond the Border - new visions from Belize which was originally displayed in Chetumal, Mexico in September. The show will be on for one month in Belize City.

Portrait of Andy Palacio presented
Friday October 8, 2010
Today American artist Ashanti Johnson visited the Image Factory Art Foundation along with his agent Barbara Mobley to formally present a portrait of Belize’s music icon Andy Palacio. The drawing was handed over to Gilvano Swasey, curator of the Image Factory and board member of the Andy Palacio Foundation. Also in attendance for the brief ceremony which took place on the edge of the Haulover Creek overlooking the Caribbean Sea were artists Michael Gordon, and Erron Golanche.
As a gesture of goodwill among fellow artists Gilvano presented a set of Image Factory publications to the visiting artist. The guests were also given a tour of the Factory gallery and library where a lively discussion about art and culture was held. The Image Factory will hand over the drawing of Andy Palacio to the Gulisi Garifuna Museum in Dangriga as is the wish of the artist.
Ashanti Johnson (b.1950), born Amos Johnson in Charleston, South Carolina, assumed the Ashanti name because he held a close, personal affinity for the Asante people of Ghana, signifying that the association carried over to his aesthetics as an artist. His work stylistically follows the tradition established by Charles White, where representational imagery is seen as the best means of conveying cultural identity. Ashanti Johnson is an alumnus of Syracuse University, and his work appears in the permanent collections of the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia; the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, Texas; as well as other public and private institutions across this country and abroad.

ART IN YOUR FACE
The Image Factory has embarked on a series of presentations called Art In Your Face. Curator of the Factory Gilvano Swasey has been leading the charge with high octane interactive talks to young Belize City students. The encounters center around the power of art and the practical applications to our everyday lives. Like a carnival showman Swasey pulls out all kinds of art samples and engages the students in discussions, dialogue and arguments. He encourages them to critique the pieces, and to speak their minds as to how the works make them feel. The small white painting he holds below is a collage of cockroach wings and legs made by the Cuban duo El Soca y Fabian.
On Tuesday, 24 August 2010 the exhibition Más Allá de la Frontera opened at the Museum of Mayan Culture in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The exhibit is a collaboration between the Embassy of Mexico, the Department of Culture of the State of Quintana Roo and the Image Factory Art Foundation. Over 30 Belizean artists' works are in the show including a selection of digital photographs from students of the Art Center in Belize.

Pronto is symbolic for the Image Factory, as none of the artists involved have previously exhibited at the gallery. It reflects our agenda to promote and stimulate the production, exhibition and documentation of art in a progressive, innovative and spirited manner.
