                                                  Picture
On Wednesday June 22, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. two new books were presented at the Image Factory to the public Adügǘrahani: A Walk Through Garifuna Spiritualism and Electoral Politics in Belize: The Naked Truth by I Myrtle Palacio.

Palacio wrote the Garifuna spiritualism book to document traditional knowledge—the Dugu and all nine rituals associated with the ceremony, to investigate the misunderstood phenomenon of Garifuna spiritualism  and to raise awareness to anomalies.  The author makes special thanks to Garifuna icon and Buyei John Mariano who inspired, persued and permitted research to pass on knowledge to the next generation and in whose memory this detailed description was written.

She researched the Electoral Politics Book to contribute to the discourse on enhancing the quality of democracy--the culture of international election observation, safeguarding and strengthening democratic institutions, electoral systems and management. The book presents an overview of the system of governance from the public meeting to the National Assembly and tracks voter behaviour via voter turnout.

I Myrtle Palacio served as a teacher at primary and tertiary levels in Belize. She served in the public service for almost 10 years introducing voter education and the computerization of the electoral database. In the private sector she pioneered the computer industry and political polling culture in Belize. She is self-educated to the graduate school level in urban studies specializing in social planning and community development. Palacio has published in the areas of socio-cultural and socio-political topics since 1990. She has dedicated the second book to her grandchildren and their generation of Belizeans.

The books will be on sale for $40BZ each at the Image Factory shop, the Angelus Press, Brodies and other places where books are sold. You can contact the author directly at

On Monday June 20th at 10:00 am at the Image Factory      the 2nd edition of 13 Chapters of a History of Belize by Assad Shoman  now called a history of Belize in 13 Chapters was presented. At the presentation Dr. Carla Barnett delivered an overview of the new book and the author Assad Shoman made some brief remarks. The book is published by the Angelus Press.

“It is nearly 20 years since the first edition of Thirteen Chapters of a History of Belize and much has happened since then. Thus, there was a clear need for a new edition and Assad Shoman is to be congratulated for taking on the task. The result is an impressive journey through several centuries of Belizean history that brings the story up to date while sharpening the focus and shortening the treatment of the period before 1990 given in the first edition.

Shoman has managed to limit the new edition to thirteen chapters despite adding much new material. This covers the internal politics of Belize up to 2008, the impact of globalization on the country and the twists and turns of the diferendum withGuatemala. The treatment of the latter is exceptionally good and, if the dispute ever goes to the International Court of Justice, this book would be an excellent starting place for the general reader.” - Victor Bulmer-Thomas

welcome. congratulations to bastien. he found the light switch and turned it on. when-- “they have all gone to bed in the bed of their choices.” – dr seuss. why do we learn to read? when we don’t like reading? why do we learn to write, when all we do is punch in text messages, the restraining orders of our intimacy? today we present
Citizens of Decadence by Bastien Cantareul
on the surface it is a small book of poems. about 5 inches wide and 8 inches high. set in a sans-serif font inside and a wild decadent font outside. but if you read these poems, you will realize that at 17 Bastien has opened his eyes not just to consume light /but to become “an insurgent to uncertainty”/as he says, “Won’t follow darkness. Won’t follow suit. I mourn your blindness.”

Poets must manage light and loneliness is essential.
Poets need to learn how to disable their Facebook wall.
Poets need to publish their works online every day.
Poets need to write things with their hands sometimes. Write in fragments to the bitter end.

If you expect instant gratification, then prepare for familiarity with disappointment. Things take centuries to change. So start working.

New Book Citizens of Decadence released
                                                  Wednesday 15 June 2011

The Image Factory Art Foundation invites you to the public presentation of  Citizens of Decadence by Bastien Cantareul on Wednesday June 15, 2011 at 10am at the Image Factory. The poet will be on hand to present his first book and perform a few of his works.

Born in Belize City and raised in Corozal, Bastien Cantareul started writing at an early age, using  music as a basis for his poetry. His writing springs from lyrics he writes for his band. He is seventeen. He also writes visual poetry which you can view on line.

On writing he states, “Writing helps me deal/cope with daily life, helps me relax and get my feelings out.”

He was provoked to write and publish the book by his girlfriend who is an avid reader. His expectations from the audience is that they understand what he is saying about the world and Belize and people’s attitudes and actions in relation to decadence or corruption in all of us.

The book will be available from the Image Factory Shop or you can contact Bastien directly on Facebook at Citizens of Decadence.

                                                  Friday 6 May 2011
Last night the Image Factory space was swarming with hundreds of joyous students, parents and friends for the opening of the 3040 art exhibition. The hype had been building for weeks on Facebook and from the size of the turnout it was certainly one of the largest crowds the Image Factory has seen in its 16 years of artistic presentations.

A brief ceremony was held on the Factory deck overlooking the Haulover Creek honouring Mrs Michele Perdomo for her thirty eight years of service as an art teacher at St. John’s College. Mr. Kirkland Smith, Art Centre director and Ms Dianne Lindo, SJC Provost presented a bouquet and commemorative plaque to a gracious Mrs. Perdomo.

                                                  Press Release

The Image Factory Art Foundation in collaboration with the Belize Art Centre presents 3040 an art exhibition. The show includes drawing, painting, sculpture and photography.

Join us as we celebrate 30 years of Belizean Independence and 40 years of our art program at St. John’s College. Come and experience an exciting exhibition involving over 500 works of art by students from St. John’s College (High School and Junior College), Maud Williams High School, E.P. Yorke, Sadie Vernon and St. Catherine Academy.

The students and teachers of the Art Centre agreed to organize this art show to acknowledge and recognize that the right to express ourselves freely is a gift that we must cherish and hold strong as a pillar of our national development.

                                                  1971 – 2011

The art program at St. John’s College began as an art club in 1970 with six students. In 1971 - 72, the High School study hall period at 11:05 am was used for the first art classes.

The art program was formalized in 1979 when Father Leo Weber, SJ hired Mrs. Michele Perdomo as the first full time art teacher. His support was vital to the program’s growth as art struggled to make the transition from an extracurricular activity or extra class to a fully integrated subject on the timetable.

In May 2001 the art program moved into its current home the Art Centre. The program has expanded to serve students from Edward P. Yorke High School, Sadie Vernon Technical High School, St. Catherine’s Academy and more recently, Maud Williams High School.

Today, at least 250 students do art at the Art Centre under the guidance of four full time art teachers.

The mission of the Art Centre is to promote and oversee the growth and development of the visual arts in all primary and secondary schools. A new digital lab for new media arts is being developed to meet the needs of the contemporary visual art environment. The Art Centre program continues to grow after 40 years.

                                                  el fleco

El Fleco is a signpost spot in art for Belize. Here we have an artist whose life is her work. At 24, she’s already been secretary, art student, teacher and girlfriend. She dropped out of art school. She resigned a few times. At the core, El Fleco is an artist. She says dormant, I say conceptual. She is honest.

I asked Kate if I could write and design a book about her 24 year old life not because I am fascinated by the idea to “turn up the lights”, but because I want the rest of our population especially those with social power to recognize that our educational and cultural foundations are based in theatrical fakery. We have too many institutions void, bankrupt and lacking in diligence. Our sense of urgency is becoming extinct.

Jill states, “embracing different cultures has taught me to appreciate and learn from our differences and understanding the underlying similarities we all share. I have always been fascinated with stories and mythology and symbolism. After a 10 year interlude of focusing on the unique Kriol culture of Belize, I have been reacquainting myself with some old friends wandering around in my subconscious. That's where I began to dust off some old legends and myths.”

                                                  PLACENCIA SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

                                                  14 February 2011

Bright colors, sterling silver and mother-of-pearl, ten thousand watt smiles, fresh squeezed orange juice and pretty paintings. These were just some of the images that wafted from the sidewalk in Placencia this past weekend. Artists, artisans, food vendors and jewelry makers gave a very good display for the annual Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival. Artists residing in the peninsula, as well as artists from other parts of Belize brought their best artwork to be sold at the Festival. Boyarde Messenger, who recently exhibited her work “Body+Space” in the Image Factory, had her prints and photographs on sale as well as some very spunky and fashion forward dresses. Another artist, Alex had some of the most colorful paintings on display at the festival. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Alex displayed a beautiful portrait of her daughter in a blue and red heart polka dot dress. The legendary Carolyn Carr had some very beautiful paintings for sale, including prints of the painting that was featured on the 2009 BTL phone directory. Jill Burgess had a very beautiful booth with excellent paintings on boat paddles, found wood and bamboo. Burgess’ booth featured musician and drum instructor EmmethYoung, who entertained the passersbys with riveting drum solos. It surely was a sight to behold as children would stop to see the dancers, and would even occasionally join in the dancing or by shaking the shakas.  Brian Vernon had a quaint booth, were he sold everything from ship in bottle pieces, to paintings to baskets made from folded paper. He had a very special piece, which was a tiny ship in a Dior Homme cologne bottle. Photographer Ernie Alpuche had some of his fashion photography work on sale. His booth also featured original designs from Maureen Navarette, red and white purses, quite appropriate for the season.

Jewelry makers like Janice Young, Khadija Assales, Yscela Alpuche and Gina, to name a few, had some of the most unique and exotic pieces for sale. Their booths, along with all the other jewelry booths, featured the very best designs in rings, bracelets, and necklaces made of beads, silver, and other beautiful materials.

Artisans had beautiful sculptures and jewelry made form conch shells, other booths made exciting earrings from feathers. Some artisans used wood as their material of choice to create truly beautiful sculptures and jewelry. The festival also featured various types of hand-made soaps, of very scrumptious Caribbean flavors.

Cubola’s booth featured an assortment of their publications and products. Their representatives were friendly and very knowledgeable of their products as they pleasantly answered questions and queries from curious patrons. Another lovely booth was that of Papaya Boutique, which featured the best in baby couture, they had splendidly designed baby apparel, toys and trinkets on sale.

The Image Factory’s booth featured several delightful pieces of original artwork by local artists for example Pen Cayetano, Ignatius Peyrefitte and Lita Krohn.

St. John’s Memorial Primary School had a beautiful art booth where they had paint, paintbrushes and paper and encouraged children at the festival to paint. They had calendars made by the students on sale. The Primary School also held a silent auction of their calendars to raise funds for their school. On Sunday they had materials to make Valentine’s Day cards and encourage all the children to make their own cards to give to   their parents. Some of these cards made by students and teachers of the St. John’s Memorial Primary School, as well as by children at the festival were on sale.

Food and drinks were not far behind. The peninsula most definitely boasted some of the best cooks, bakers, chocolatiers and grill chefs this weekend. The food vendors had Rice and Beans, Cow Foot soup, Barbeque, fresh baked cookies, breads and muffins and several other selections of Belizean cuisine. The Rotary Group had a refreshment booth were ice-cold soft drinks and stronger beverages were served. While they served up the refreshments, local djays kept the patrons entertained with the latest and best in Punta, Pop, dancehall and hip hop music. The youths did Dougie, Jerk and Punta competitions in the evenings.

The Placencia Sidewalk Art festival was surely a success. The rainy weather on the second day surely did not put a damper on the event. Vendors claimed their booths and brought the best of the weather-proof products, the djays played very active tunes and the festival was lively and buzzing with activity once more. The festival was a joint effort between the Belize Tourism Association of Placencia, the community along with the participation of all the artists, artisans and vendors.

Rum and Vodka was served with cupcakes and sandwiches. Boyarde wore a gold, black and white dress. A few of her painted models walked around the Factory space. Yasser Musa, director of the Image Factory who imagined a hostile takeover of the Factory  congratulated the artist and spoke specifically about the night pictures saying, "they evoke a beautiful solitude. I especially like the Baymen Avenue picture because I shop at Tong's store, where the prices are cheaper." As Boyarde took the Factory floor to thank the crowd for coming, her curator Bill Skinner whispered in her ear, then she said, "the works are for sale!"
